ALASKA ADVENTURE COLLECTION MOVIE PAGE

ALASKA ADVENTURE COLLECTION

First things first, this set has no closed captioning!!!! Booooo!!

So, with the title "Alaska Adventure", you would think that these
movies are all about Alaska!! NOPE!!!!! Not only are there very few
that's actually about Alaska, some aren't even in the US!! Canada
is the locale for several of these!! Along with Montana, Russia etc.!!!

CALL OF THE YUKON(1938)

This first movie is actually suppose to be in Alaska!!

Not a terrible movie, but it is a little hard to hear in several
spots! Considering its age, this is no surprise!! The main crux
of the story here is a woman writer is up in Alaska and wants
to see the ice breaking up on the river! She and a companion
get stuck together, and this is about their trip up to the nearest
town called Nenana where the big thing is to guess when the
ice will crack on the river!! This town really does exist in Alaska!!! B-

A review from an IMDb.com customer:

Call Of The Yukon is a low-grade film from a cheap studio.
The acting is unbelievable and the plot does very little to
sustain one's interest. In fact I'd say the canine performers
add more to the film than the humans. Yet if you look past
this then you may perhaps enjoy the film simply for its
location shots of the frozen north and its depiction of wildlife,
if that's your kind of thing.

The one thing that I thought was clever in the writing was
how the behaviour of the dogs in the film reflect the attitudes
of the main characters. But, this did little to save what was
really just a hackneyed attempt at an adventure film. I was
so grateful when this cheesy and sloppily chopped together
film ended. And not a minute too soon... - napol3onsolo

LOST IN THE BARRENS(1990):

The setting here: Canada!!

A young man of 15 who's lost his parents and has been in
a pretty posh school, paid for by his trust fund, suddenly finds
himself penniless and ends up living with his uncle in the boonies!!!
This is about him learning what's really important in life!

This has Graham Greene(Maverick, Die Hard 2: Die Hard With
A Vengeance) in it as the lead "Indian"!! C+

A review from IMDb:

When your world wise elders tell you not to go into The
Barrons... listen to them! They know what they are talking
about ! Sure, sure, it was only supposed to be a day canoe
trip but there are always those "just around the corner"
things you must investigate ! The boys, Nicholas Shields
and Evan Adams, play their characters quite believably.
Graham Green is his usual wise self and always a pleasure
to find in any film.

One of the dreaded plot holes for me was just why the
school sent Jamie away so close to the end of a semester.
NOT to mention just how they keep getting those fires
started and manage to ... well... lots of holes.

It's basically an "after school teach the kids inter cultural
tolerance" kind of picture and as such is pretty watchable
but be prepared to use that suspension of disbelief.

The BEAR is terrific! - Byrdz

STORM AND SORROW(1990):

Setting: Russia!!!

I guess this was a true story that had been embellished upon!
This is about a stupid "sport", stupid people who do it, and the
results of stupid decisions!! This all adds up to a stupid movie!! D

A review from IMDb.com:

I watched this expecting little and receiving even less. 1970's
feminism with Farrah Fawcett screen time thrown in. Tough
girl with big heart pursues difficult sport to prove something.
The main characters female co-hort went between used,
underhanded, sneaky and best friend. Because, you know,
women never really pull for each other unless they are foreign
and speak little English, as seen in last third of movie. Long
blown out hair and perfect skin made this even less than a
movie about mountain climbing in some ways. I was just
endlessly reminded that it was a TV movie, and that makes
any movie hardly worth interpreting. - MBay

Cast of Storm And Sorrow:

Lori Singer ... Molly Higgins
Todd Allen ... Garry Ullin

Tom O'Brien ... John Roskelly

SPIRIT OF THE EAGLE(1991):

The setting: Northwest continental US!!

Much better than the next movie, also with Dan Haggerty,
this is more suited to him than the next movie! He plays
pretty much the same character that he did in Grizzly Adams,
and the whole story is surviving in the wilderness!!! The baddies
here are actually a lot of fun, and this has one of the prettiest
young ladies in it that I've ever seen, Jeri Arredondo!! Too bed
the kid was such a bad actor!! B-

A review from IMDb.com:

This is an adventure movie made for kids only. Dan
Haggerty plays again the same part he had as Grizzly
Addams in the seventies. William Smith, here again
with only one eye, plays the bad guy Hatchett who
wants to kill Haggerty. Smith has some really good
scenes here and sometimes he makes you forget
that it is only a movie for kids.- wolfhell88

Cast of Spirit Of The Eagle:

Dan Haggerty ... Big Eli McDonaugh
William Smith ... Hatchett
Trever Yarrish ... Little Eli

SIGN OF THE OTTER(AKA THE LITTLE PATRIOT)(1995):

The setting: somewhere in Northeast America during the Revolutionary
War!!

You know how there's that one movie in a set that makes buying
the set worth the price? Welp, this ISN'T that movie!!!! LOL!! With
Dan Haggerty(Grizzly Adams) in it, you'd think that this would at
least be interesting! But, unfortunately, Dan is totally misused in
this as a commander of a local band of patriots fighting the local
band of British soldiers!! And the story isn't even about him, but
about a kid who gets captured by the British and his father's attempt
at saving him!! C+

A review from IMDb.com:

Strikingly beautiful scenery, photographed well, is the long
suit of this low budget independent affair filmed for the most
part in Ontario and upper New York State, but even its targeted
audience of young children will not fail to notice a lack of realism
that pervades this work intended to produce dramatic historic
interest, while hampered by a script that generally ignores the
demands of logic. Director/producer/screenwriter J. Christian
Ingvordsen (as John Christian) plays Samuel Todd, a wilderness
farmer during the period of the American Revolution persuaded
to enlist with Colonial rebels in defense of Patriot lands against
attacks from soldiers of the Crown, reluctantly leaving behind
his wife and young son James, but after he discovers that the
boy has been captured by British troops along with their Mohawk
Indian allies Samuel, accompanied by Tekhane (John Weiner)
leader of a local Delaware tribe termed here Lenape, from their
language, sets out to rescue the lad from enemy held Fort Niagara.
This is a large order for the pair to attempt as the English and
Mohawk occupied fort houses James as a shackled prisoner
within the compound jail (restored Fort Ticonderoga along the
New York/Vermont border serves as Fort Niagara), but the
more gullible viewers will enjoy the splendid countryside while
ignoring the many implausibilities that occur along the way,
in particular those involving ineffective enemy troops and
their accompanying Indian warriors, all of whom are loud
enough but seemingly never capable or alert. Ingvordsen,
under variations of his name, not only stars, scripts, and directs
here, but is behind the camera and a vigorous stunt performer
as well, and while he lacks expressivity as an actor, he is certainly
as competent as the majority of the cast, a quaint lot, specially
the "Indians" which, although decidedly culturally diverse with
a broad displacement of races, and ancestries to boot, display
very little that is representative of the aboriginal. The dialogue
lacks a colonial flavour, and inaccuracies are rife, e.g., James is
sequestered in "the brig", a term exclusive to seagoing vessels,
while accents freely wax and wane, largely reliant upon the
native strength of a player's metropolitan area patois, and there
is cartoonish stereotyping throughout, notably of English army
officers, drawn as a remarkably foppish bunch; a lack of
correctness extends even to the DVD box that displays a
misspelling for Niagara, thrice for Ingvordsen, and a cover
photograph of Dan Haggerty (billed first but with a blessedly
small role) with arms about an Indian squaw and a young
boy, neither of whom appear in the film. - rsoonsa

LEGEND OF THE RUBY SILVER(1996):

Location: Never says, but a couple of reviewers place it in
Montana!!

Not a bad movie, starring John Schneider(Dukes Of Hazard, Smallville)
as a miner with big goals who meets up with a widow of a miner who
lost his life mining!! She has a son, and John, she and the son, along with
a drunk, go in search of silver! B

A review from IMDb.com:

A con man mining promoter (John Schnieder, a drunk, has-been
miner (Bruce Weitz), a lovely widow (Rebecca Jenkins) and her
troubled son (Jonathon Jackson) head off into the mountains to
find the long dead Ruby Silver mine. Along the way, they find
themselves.

It is mostly a story about a son who misses his dad, being befriended
by a terminal drunk. They help each other. Weitz & Jackson are
wonderful. Also, as the mining promoter, John Schnieder gives
a dark & troubling performance you'll never see on Dukes of
Hazzard. Wish more TV movies were like this. - krustenechse

Cast of Legend Of The Ruby Silver:

David Castro ... Morrissey (as David Everhart)
Larry Day ... Suit #1
Stephen Hair ... Suit #2

John Schneider ... Tommy Towne
Bruce Weitz ... Bill McLean

WALKING THUNDER(1997):

Location: Somewhere between Connecticut and California in
pioneer days!

The reviewer from IMDb is not correct, John had one more
movie after this one("Savant")! Anyway, this is actually pretty
decent, but not riveting!! Denver plays a man who's decided
to move his family from Connecticut to California when, while
on the trail there, they have a mishap and their wagon gets
destroyed, leaving them stranded in the wilderness! They find
help, and struggles, from some of the very few people in the
area!! A good vehicle for Denver, and James Read does a great
job here!! The older boy(David Tom) also is good, and the younger
boy is fair! A good family movie!! A-

A review from IMDb.com:

This was said to be John Denver's last film. As I watched it,
I couldn't help but feel sadness over that aspect. I thought
this was a wonderful family film with John Denver playing
a role I had longed wanted to see him in. A pioneer. A man
blazing a wild mountain trail in a covered wagon. Being in
the Rockies, with native Americans, bears, eagles, wolves,
and mountain men. The story was very well told. The actors
all played their roles to perfection. I love these kind of stories.
Whenever they are made on modern film, we are able to
re-live the past with these stories. I remember seeing James
Reed in the mini-series North and South. I liked him as the
Union soldier. He was great in this as well. The boys who
played John Denver's sons looked familiar, but I couldn't
place them in other projects. Entertainment Tonight
highlighted the story about this final film. I wouldn't have
known about it otherwise. When it was shown on cable,
my sister taped it for me to see. All in all, this film will be
forever treasured by true-blue John Denver fans. And we
all wish, more than anything, that he was still around to
give us more of the same. Ten plus in my book. - astoryweaver

ESCAPE FROM ALASKA(AKA AVALANCHE)(1999):

And the setting for the last movie: Juneau, Alaska!!

This isn't bad! Basic story: A man and woman get caught in
an avalanche, man gets killed, woman blames best friend for
not showing up on time to pick them up!! Woman comes back
two years later as an EPA agent to oversee a pipeline project and
meets back up with old friend! Sparks ensue, as well as more
avalanches!! B

A review from IMDb.com:

I would have to say based on Hollow Point, Black Point,
TimeCop 3 and Ulterior Motives, OF COURSE Griffith would
do a movie like this. It's practically perfect for him. I'm not
saying he's a bad actor or that the movie was particularly
good. I think maybe his performance made the movie
worth watching.

The story line is a bit too simple but it does have a plot
and that is after all what it takes to keep most movie fans
in the zone. The budget was clearly too small because there
was way to much green screen. But the stunts were rather
good, the lines were pretty realistic and most important of
all, the acting was good. It's wasn't great but no where near
bad. - DrDimensio
